My Summer Project

In august we were set a summer project to review two films and create a mood board of where we see ourselves in five years.
Film Reviews
The films I chose were The Great Gatsby (2013) and Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961).

The Great Gatsby (2013) Baz Lurhmann

The Great Gatsby (2013) Is a romance drama. Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel of the same name about millionaire Jay Gatsby and Nick Carroway, who recounts his encounter with Gatsby during the Roaring Twenties.
The film was co-written and directed by Baz Lurhmann who's signature style is stamped on the film.
the film won the Best Costume Design at the 2014 Academy Awards and was nominated for Best Makeup and Hair at the 2014 British Academy Film Awards. This is no surprise from watching the film. Not only is the Makeup, Hair and Costume mirroring society at the time it also became iconic setting a worldwide trend for the “gatsby” style. Designers were taking influences from the film and were releasing lines inspired by the deep berry lips and flapper style dresses.
Maurizio Silvi, the key makeup artist on the film was able to execute his designs in a way that inspired a forgotten style to be re-vamped.
Carey Mulligan who played Daisy Buchanan in the film became a style icon whose image was used to recreate the classic 1920’s look with a modern twist.
In an interview on flare.com Silvi states himself “All women can wear a look inspired by this film.  Throughout the film you will see several different hair colour shades from blonde to red to black to brunette. I’m sure that everyone can adapt a Gatsby look that suits them best.”
Using a makeup based on the classic contrast of red and black and such an iconic period look means this look was bound to be a hit with critics and Im sure the fact that it was so adaptable to every woman out there is the main reason this film became so iconic in terms of fashion and style.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) Blake Edwards

Breakfast At Tiffanys (1961) is a romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, loosely based on the novella of the same name by Truman Capote.
The film was directed by Blake Edwards.
In 2012, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. This is reflected through the styling of Holly (Hepburn) which mirrors that of society at the time.
This film is iconic because of Audrey Hepburn who was a major Hollywood starlet during the 60’s.
The films poster is an iconic shot of Audrey in a restaurant however this shot is never shown in the film. She is shown wearing a little black dress, hat and holding a cigarette holder. This Shot has been recreated across the world by numerous people and so Audrey has become a style icon.
The makeup Holly wears is classic 60’s with a “feline flick” representing the time in which the movie is set.
Wally Westmore was the head makeup artist on this feature and I think he reflected the era perfectly. Holly’s character appears chic and timeless which is why I believe this film has been so successful throughout time.

I chose these two films as I felt they both reflected their setting and time very well but the contrast of the tame Breakfast at Tiffany's and the bright, colourful Great Gatsby made the project interesting.

Mood Board

I used the interenet and magazines to gather images for my mood board. As I hope to go into the fashion industry my mood board reflects this with a lot of fashion images. The pictures of celebrities show how I am interested in doing celebrity makeup. There is a medal to suggest winning competitions such as Illamasqua's Distinction in Make Up Artistry Awards one day. I used 3D elements such as the makeup brush and a scroll and cap I made to signify my graduation as I am so excited to graduate from Solent with my degree!

we also had the chance to split into groups and look at each others moodboards.

This moodboard was done by Isabelle Greer

Isabelle's moodboard gets her ideas across well as it has a lot of text to help show her intentions. She said she was inspired by magazines and film, saying she would love to work in either the fashion or the film industry as they are fast paced and exciting. Inspired by her love for the 50's and vintage Isabelle included pictures of iconic style and makeup looks such as the cat eye sunglasses, the red lip and the Hitchcock heroine element.
When asked, Isabelle said she was happy with the outcome of her piece describing it as "a jumble, mixture of everything I like".

The next moodboard was done by Chloe Hall

Chloe said her moodboard was heavily inspired by the images in Vogue magazine.
Chloe was satisfied with the outcome of her moodboard and felt it reflected her future in which she see’s herself working in the fashion industry, living in Manhattan and being chauffeured to all her appointments.

The next persons work we looked at was Rachel Rock

Rachels inspiration was Tim Burton and the makeup on his films. She felt he influenced her plans to go into the film industry and pursue "weird, crazy makeup" as she says. She loves anything unique and her ambition is to be the lead makeup artist on a Tim Burton film.
Although she was proud of her moodboard she said it could have been improved through a visual stimulus and wished she'd included pictures of the work that inspires her.

The final moodboard was done by Layna Duggan
Layna's moodboard was unique because she created it online using only images off the internet. She explained to us how she took the brief very literally and produced images that symbolised exactly what she wanted in five years time. She described how she would love to one day write about makeup in a big magazine and live in London. I personally really like the way Layna has portrayed her ideas so clearly. It looks extremely polished and is clear.
